Saltwater State Park

Saltwater State Park - Des Moines

Description:

The beach has a gentle slope and is relativley shallow for about 40 yards out from the bulkhead. There is a remnant of a barge sitting in 30 to 40 feet of water.  It is a medium swim out to the buoys, but OK for beginners who are in good shape.

Revision 2009: There are three new features at the park and many tire piles have been removed. Large boulder piles we installed in February.  Fish have started inhabiting the reefs.  There are now large numbers of rockfish, surfperch, lings and greenlings on the reef.  Large schools of shiner perch and many shrimp now call these reefs home.  This turned from a ho-hum dive to a really good dive.

Directions:

  • Take I-5 to the Kent- Des Moines exit.
  • Go west and take a left onto Marine View drive.
  • Follow Marine View Drive south a mile or two until 252nd or So.  You should see signs for Saltwater State park.
  • Turn right into the park and go half a block to the park entrance.

Note: Parking free this year

Amenities: Public restrooms, pick nic tables and grill pits, rinse station for kids and dive gear, over night camping, Seasonal store.
