Pieter Booth, Dave Wakeley and Mike Snow met for a couple of very nice dives
Saturday morning at Three Tree Point. Weather was calm and partly sunny with
calm water and very little current. Visibility was five feet above ten feet
MSL, expanding to twenty feet below. We saw lots of life scattered about the
dive site: white and orange giant plumose anemones, sunflower stars, several
brown and copper rockfish, mating red rock and helmet crabs, a few painted
greenlings, several sole, a few spotted ratfish, a wolf eel down in the white
PVC pipe at ~60' and... octopi! There was one way, way back under the golf ball
boat, but you could barely see his tentacles. The stars of the show were the
red octopus Mike found during the safety on the first dive and juvenile giant
pacific octopus Dave found on the second dive at ~50'. Both were out in the
open and tolerant of photography and gentle prodding. Mike took off his glove
and was able to pet the GPO. We played with both for a good half-hour over the
course of the two dives. Max depth was 80' on the first dive, 65' on the
second. Great dives! |
