Jason Morgan, Northwest Straits Foundation

The Foundation believes in working together to restore a thriving marine ecosystem in the Northwest Straits of the Salish Sea. The intention behind the Northwest Straits Initiative is that small groups of people, working to protect and restore their local waters, can work together to have an ecosystem-wide impact. As divers, we can not only benefit greatly from this protection but we also may be able to have some fun and help out.

Jason Morgan is a Marine Biologist for the Northwest Straits Foundation (NWSF) with his work focusing on eliminating harm from lost and abandoned fishing gear, and monitoring the effectiveness of shoreline restoration efforts in Puget Sound. He developed his interest in derelict fishing gear during his six years working in commercial fisheries management while witnessing firsthand the negative impacts of lost and abandoned gear. Jason will discuss the collaborative citizen-based approach of the Northwest Straits Initiative, and the history, challenges, successes, and next steps of the NWSF’s Derelict Gear Program.
