Photo and Video Workshop – Ed Gullekson and Randy Pedersen

Please join the Seahorses as we host a very special program dedicated to getting introduced to, or honing, your underwater photo and video skills.  We have held a few equipment tech talk programs in the past, but never one quite like this! Sure, there will be plenty of equipment selection tech to be discussed, but this program is dedicated to getting you the skills you need to make your photos and videos the best they can be. Ed and Randy have over 60 years of combined diving experience and nearly 50 of those have been spent behind viewfinders gathering underwater imagery. Best of all, these guys have the experience to show you what you need to do to accommodate our sometimes challenging local dive environment and not just the clear blue warm waters of the tropics.

First, Ed Gullekson, our club social media director, will take you on a journey showing you how to capture incredible underwater still images that will wow your diving and non-diving buddies alike. You have figured out your lighting and can see the images you take. The camera gets the focus right most of the time but why are the images oftentimes so uninteresting to look at?  The answer is – image composition!  Ed is going to help you understand the basics of image composition and get you turning boring fish butt photos into interesting and dramatic image creations. For the photo side of the workshop we will review composition patterns. You’ll get firsthand examples of how to create images that catch the eye and draw people to your photos.

Next, Randy Pedersen, our club photo and history chairman, will take you into the challenging and exciting world or underwater videography. What does it take to shoot a good video clip? The short answer is many of the things that you’ll need to get a great photo with the added element of motion. Randy’s going to take the time to show you some of the tricks of the trade he has learned over many years. You’ll enjoy the results of getting superb video shots without getting a lot of technical talk.

The classroom portion of the workshop will be during tonight’s general club indoor meeting.  We’ll do a dive on the weekend to try out our newly acquired skills and, post-dive, we’ll get together so you’ll get all the feedback you need to make them even better!  If you are interested please email, call or PM Ed Gullekson.  The diving location and timing will be either (or maybe both) Mukilteo Boeing Dock and Redondo. We will finalize the location when we know who is going to dive.

Ed can be reached at or 206-552-4722.

Cost is free for Sea Horse members and $40 for non-members (includes a free membership if eligible).
