Budget Florida Diving, Monica Fredrickson

This is the perfect program if you’re a diver going to Florida, but maybe you don’t have the time, or funds, for big offshore guided dives. Perhaps you’re on a nice vacation with friends and family and want everyone to be included?  Maybe you’ve got a business trip planned, and spending hours of driving is just too much to get to the popular coastal dive sites?  Or, you’ve done all the big coastal dives and are looking for something completely different but equally adventurous? Then you should positively consider some dives in Florida that are off the beaten path. Monica will be here to present several opportunities to get your diving fix in all over the Sunshine State without a lot of time and expense regardless of where you may me staying in this very expansive state.

While living in Florida, Monica was on a shoestring budget. There wasn’t much money for the classic big wreck dives or long range reef dives characteristic of the keys. With $2.50 fills, used gear, and a friend’s old Saturn, she and her dive buddies spent the weekends exploring Florida’s waters off the beaten path.  In her presentation, she’ll show you the hidden gems they found while exploring places many divers never think of.  This will greatly expand your options for the next time you visit the Sunshine State.

Monica couldn’t sleep one night and around 2am thought, “Diving! That sounds like fun.” So, she looked up how to learn to dive and got enrolled the next morning. She dove Florida for 2 years before coming to Washington on an internship. While initially not sure about the cold water, she was hooked after one dive.  There was harbor seals, octopus, sea stars, huge anemones, a welcoming diving community, and of course the Boeing Sea Horse Scuba Club. She spent one more year exploring Florida then moved up to Washington where she has been diving the Puget Sound since.
