Trina Wellman, Ph.D., SeaDoc Society Report on Local SCUBA Diving

It’s well known that our local waters host some of the most spectacular diving in the United States. The marine critters, large and small, and seafloor topography of this area are sensational. To understand how divers are interacting with this local gem, Trina designed and implemented a survey of resident divers and dive shop owners in order to collect data such as the perceptions of the quality of sites, attributes of preferred sites and number of dives made annually. The survey is very important to us since it was designed to ask pertinent questions needed to characterize the role of scuba in inland waters to the Washington State economy. The information generated by this assessment will help inform effective coastal and marine resource management and policy decision-making, especially as relates to marine protected areas and other marine planning.

Please join us as we are delighted to host Trina of Northern Economics, Inc. as she presents an insightful and fascinating study of the various demographics of the Washington State SCUBA Diver. During the presentation you will gain such insights as to who we are as we break down the population of local divers. Trina surveyed hundreds of divers to understand such things as where the most popular dive sites are and what specific activities within the dive community are the most popular. Also of interest is how we break down our expenditures while we pursue our diving activities.

The recently completed study is entitled: Economic Impacts of Washington State Resident Scuba Divers. Prepared for SeaDoc Society. March, 2016. Project Manager –Katharine Wellman, Ph.D.

Come join your fellow Seahorses for a great family-friendly presentation with some good food and cold beverages. Children’s menu available too!
